Label your file tabs with whatever terms make sense to you, and arrange them in alphabetical order so that you can find the information you need when you need it. Put a label on both the hanging file and the interior file so that when you remove an interior file you know where to put it back.

Remember that these papers eventually need action, so don’t leave them in these files too long. Your WIP files are only for sorting the papers as you process them.

Current/Action Taken Files

You’ll also need a set of files for once you’ve taken action on the papers in your WIP files but you don’t want to get rid of the paper just yet. Set up another portable filing bin with a lid, or use a filing cabinet drawer. Again, use hanging files and label the files in a way that makes sense to you, in alphabetical order.
